Injection Instructions

LUPRON (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE) INJECTION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Necessary materials:
    • One ½ cc (ml) (50-unit) syringe with attached 29 gauge ½-inch needle
    • One 2.8 cc (1 mg/0.2 cc) Lupron (Leuprolide Acetate) multi-dose vial
    • Alcohol swab
  2. Flip blue cap off the Lupron vial and wipe the top with an alcohol swab
  3. Turn the vial upside down
  4. Using the ½ cc (50-unit) syringe with attached 29 gauge ½-inch needle, draw up the prescribed amount of the medication (0.05 cc, 0.075 cc, 0.1 cc, 0.15 cc, or 0.2 cc; depending on your specific instructions)
  5. To remove any air bubbles, point the needle up and gently tap on the syringe until all the bubbles rise to the top, then push the plunger carefully until a small drop of liquid begins to appear from the tip of the needle
  6. Wipe skin with alcohol swab at intended injection site
  7. Using the same syringe and attached needle, administer medication subcutaneously:
    • The injection can be given in the back of the arm if someone else is administering it, or in the mid-abdominal area or the top of the thigh if you are self-injecting
    • Pinch the skin with one hand and hold the syringe like a pencil with the other hand
    • Push the needle into the subcutaneous tissue at a 45-degree angle until it disappears into the skin and then inject the medication

Possible skin reaction: A red area may appear around the injection site and/or the injection site might itch and/or bruising may occur. These are all excepted reactions and will disappear over time. Please notify us if redness/bruising around the injection site appears to be enlarging or spreading.

Storage

  • Unopened bottle: The multi-dose Lupron vial may be stored at room temperature (below 86 degrees Fahrenheit) for a period of 60 days. Protect the vial from light by keeping it in the box it was dispensed in, while placed inside a dark cupboard. If you keep the Lupron vial refrigerated at all times, the expiration date lengthens to 6 months after the date of the first injection. Note: the storage temperature printed on the box suggests keeping it below 77-degrees Fahrenheit). DO NOT store it in the freezer because you must avoid freezing Lupron.
  • Opened bottle: Same as above

Use the disposable syringe(s) only once. Dispose of syringe(s) properly in a biohazard container. When biohazard container is full return it to our office or your pharmacy. Never leave syringes, drugs, or needles where children can reach them. Keep careful track of your prescribed dose of medication as it may change throughout the course of your treatment cycle. Whenever uncertain about your injection, contact our office for clarification.
