Menopur Injection Instructions

  1. Necessary Materials:
    • Menopur vial(s) (powder containing 75 IU of Menopur per vial)
    • One 2 cc (ml) sterile saline vial (Sodium Chloride)
    • One 3 cc syringe with attached 22 gauge 1 1/2-inch needle (gray cap) (for mixing)
    • One 27 gauge 1/2-inch needle (light gray cap) (for injection)
    • Alcohol swabs

  2. Snap off top cover of Menopur vial (or vials) (powder) to be used for daily dose:
    • For example, if your dose is 1 vial of Menopur (or 75 IU) per day, snap off top cover of 1 vial; if your dose is 2 vials of Menopur (or 150 IU) per day, snap off top cover of 2 vials...
  3. Make sure the needle attached to the 3 cc syringe is secured on tightly
  4. Using the 3 cc syringe with attached needle, draw up 1 (one) cc of sterile saline
  5. Using the same 3 cc syringe and needle, inject the drawn-up 1 (one) cc sterile saline into the 1st Menopur vial (powder) and allow to dissolve (you may swirl bottle gently until powder dissolves completely) while maintaining needle inside vial; once dissolved, draw entire solution (1 cc of dissolved powder) back into the syringe and pull out of empty vial
    • If your daily Menopur dose is 1 vial (or 75 IU) only, proceed to step 6
    • If your daily Menopur dose is 2 or more vials (150 IU or more), using the same 3 cc syringe and needle (now containing 1 cc of dissolved solution), inject 1 cc of dissolved solution into next (new) Menopur vial (powder) and allow to dissolve; once dissolved, draw entire solution (still 1 cc of dissolved powder) back into the syringe and pull out of empty vial; repeat this step according to the number of Menopur vials needed for daily dose

  6. Remove the 22 gauge 1 1/2-inch mixing needle (gray cap) from the 3 cc syringe containing mixed Menopur solution, and replace with the 27 gauge 1/2-inch injection needle (light gray cap)
  7. To remove any air bubbles, point the needle up and gently tap on the syringe until all the bubbles rise to the top, then push the plunger carefully until a small drop of liquid begins to appear from the tip of the needle
  8. Wipe skin with alcohol swab at intended injection site
  9. Remove cap and cover off of injection needle and administer medication subcutaneously:
    • The injection can be given in the back of the arm if someone else is administering it, or in the mid-abdominal area or the top of the thigh if you are self-injecting
    • Pinch the skin with one hand and hold the syringe like a pencil with the other hand
    • Push the needle into the subcutaneous tissue at a 45-degree angle until it disappears into the skin and then inject the medication

Possible skin reaction
: A red area may appear around the injection site and/or the injection site might itch and/or bruising may occur. These are all excepted reactions and will disappear over time. Please notify us if redness/bruising around the injection site appear to be enlarging or spreading.

Storage: Unopened Menopur vials should be kept at room temperature.

Use the disposable syringe(s) only once. Dispose of syringe(s) properly in a biohazard container. When biohazard container is full return it to our office or your pharmacy.
