Injection Instructions

CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN (HCG) (NOVAREL, PREGNYL, PROFASI) INJECTION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Necessary materials:
    • One 3 cc (ml) syringe with attached 22 gauge 1 ½-inch mixing needle (gray cap)
    • One 25 gauge 1 ½-inch (or ½-inch) injection needle (blue cap)
    • One bottle of HCG 10,000 units (powder)
    • One 10 cc sterile water bottle (Sodium Chloride)
    • Alcohol swabs
  2. Snap off the cap from both the water and HCG powder (medication) bottles
  3. Make sure the needle (gray cap) is secured tightly on the attached syringe
  4. Turn sterile water vial (Sodium Chloride) upside down and draw up 1 (one) cc sterile water into the 3 cc syringe with the attached needle
  5. Inject the drawn up 1 cc of sterile water into the HCG powder bottle, and allow to dissolve (you may gently swirl the solution until the powder dissolves completely, but DO NOT SHAKE the bottle)
  6. Using the same 3 cc syringe with attached needle, draw up the 1 cc of the dissolved powder into the syringe
  7. Remove the 22 gauge mixing needle (gray cap) from the 3 cc syringe (containing dissolved powder) and replace it with a 25 gauge 1 ½-inch (or ½-inch) injection needle (blue cap)
  8. To remove any air bubbles, point the needle up and gently tap on the syringe until all the bubbles rise to the top, then push the plunger carefully until a small drop of liquid begins to appear from the tip of the needle
  9. Wipe skin with alcohol swab at intended injection site
  10. Remove cap off of needle and administer medication intramuscularly:
    • The injection should be given in the upper outer quadrant of the buttocks (see diagram)
    • Pinch skin at injection site into a mound between thumb and forefinger and hold the syringe like a pencil with the other hand
    • Push the needle through skin into muscle at a 90-degree angle until needle disappears
    • Gently pull back on plunger until a small air bubble appears in the syringe (if blood appears in the syringe, do not panic, pull the needle out a bit, change direction, push back all the way in until needle disappears under skin), then inject medication
    • Pull needle out of skin and wipe injection site with an alcohol swab, rubbing the site gently (this will help the absorption of the medication); occasionally a small amount of blood will be visible, which is not a reason for any concern

Possible skin reaction: A red area may appear around the injection site and/or the injection site might itch and/or bruising may occur. These are all excepted reactions and will disappear over time. Please notify us if redness/bruising around the injection site appear to be enlarging or spreading.

Storage: HCG should be stored in room temperature

Use the disposable syringe(s) only once. Dispose of syringe(s) properly in a biohazard container. When biohazard container is full return it to our office or your pharmacy. Never leave syringes, drugs, or needles where children can reach them. Keep careful track of your prescribed dose of medication as it may change throughout the course of your treatment cycle. Whenever uncertain about your injection, contact our office for clarification.
