Injection Instructions

FOLLISTIM PEN INJECTION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Necessary Materials:
    • Follistim Pen
    • Follistim cartridge (300 IU, 600 IU, or 900 IU)
    • Needles (white container with seal)
    • Alcohol swabs
  2. Take top off pen and unscrew body of pen (yellow and blue pieces)
  3. Load Follistim cartridge (300 IU, 600 IU, or 900 IU) into yellow piece of disassembled pen, with colored end of cartridge facing down
  4. Screw pen back together by placing yellow piece into blue piece, making sure blue arrow (on yellow piece) and yellow line (on blue piece) are aligned
  5. Peel seal off needle container, insert needle into yellow end of pen with gentle pressure and screw needle on tightly
  6. Once pen and needle are assembled correctly, dial desired daily dose (as chosen by your physician) by turning dial towards you (counter-clockwise), making sure the correct dose is showing in the center of the display window of pen (dose lined up with IU marker)
    • If you have accidentally dialed past the correct dose, do not dial your pen back (this can lead to wastage of medication), instead keep dialing in a counter-clockwise fashion until your pen dial comes to a stop, then push in the knob (no medication will be dispensed) and redial your medication to the correct dose
  7. Wipe skin with alcohol swab at intended injection site
  8. Remove cap and cover off of needle and administer medication subcutaneously:
    • The injection can be given in the back of the arm if someone else is administering it, or in the mid-abdominal area or the top of the thigh if you are self-injecting
    • Pinch the skin with one hand and hold the syringe like a pencil with the other hand
    • Push the needle into the subcutaneous tissue at a 45-degree angle until it disappears into the skin and then inject the medication
    • Wait 10 seconds and pull out the needle
  9. Do not remove cartridge from pen if additional future injections are planned and cartridge has not been used up
  10. Refrigerate what is left of the medication (entire pen with cartridge) for your next dose

Possible skin reaction: A red area may appear around the injection site and/or the injection site might itch and/or bruising may occur. These are all excepted reactions and will disappear over time. Please notify us if redness/bruising around the injection site appear to be enlarging or spreading.

Storage

  • Unused cartridge: Maintain refrigerated. Avoid freezer.
  • Partially used cartridge/pen: Maintain refrigerated. Avoid freezer.

Use the disposable syringe(s) only once. Dispose of syringe(s) properly in a biohazard container. When biohazard container is full return it to our office or your pharmacy.
